“IN ANCIENT TIMES THE SHAMANS UNDERSTOOD THAT WHEN A PERSON EXPERIENCES A TRAUMA, WHETHER IT IS PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL, THAT IT IS POSSIBLE THAT A PART OF THEIR SOUL'S VIBRANT ESSENCE MAY LEAVE THEM, SEEKING SAFETY”.
Firstly, It is important to understand that soul loss is a good thing that happens to us and it is our bodies coping mechanism for surviving pain.
If I was going to be in a head on car collision the last place that I would want to be at the point of impact is in my body. My psyche could not endure that kind of pain. Our psyches have this brilliant self protect mechanism where a part of our essence or soul leaves the body so that we do not feel the full impact of the pain and situation.
This is understood in modern psychology as split off or disassociated parts of ourselves..
Where soul retrieval differs from the modern talk therapies is in it’s understanding of the parts that have split off. We shamans see they have split off in a very literal way and continue to exist in a definite place of non-ordinary reality, with a distinct presence and specific content that is associated with the initial reason why they left in the first place.
When parts of our vital essence (spirit) leaves us, it can cause many symptoms in our body, mind and spirit. Often this is experienced as depression, loss of purpose, listlessness, anxiety, physical pain, nervousness or chronic fatigue and a litany of other disorders and diseases.
Although soul loss is a survival mechanism the problem from a shamanic point of view is that the soul part that left usually does not come back on its own. The soul might be lost, or stolen by another person, or doesn’t know the trauma has passed and it is safe to return.
The shaman will journey to non ordinary reality to retrieve one's lost or fragmented soul part, bringing back their essence and returning wholeness back to the individual.
Soul Retrieval work differs from talk therapies also that it requires no discussion, no interrogating or fishing for clues from some distant traumatic event over some lengthy period of time..
It really is a specific healing event, a spiritual intervention where the soul parts are recovered for the client and a breakthrough of some significance takes place from this healing. Sure there’s a period of integration and after care, but this is dramatically different from the psychology game plan of conceding that vital energy has been lost, and hopes the client one day may recover it through insight, therapy and perhaps dream work.
